On October 9thThailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources announced a blanket smoking ban on public beaches. The ban will apply to 20 well-known beaches, including Pattaya Beach, Hua Hin Beach and Patong Beach and will expand to all other beaches in Thailand.
In a recent survey, 101,058 cigarette butts were found on the famous Patong Beach of Phuket. Cigarette ends and empty packs make up one third of all the beach waste.
Special smoking areas will be provided, but smoking on the beach outside those areas carries a penalty of 1 year in prison or 100,000 baht fine, or both. The ban takes effect on November 1st2017.
