Miss Vachiraporn Sae-Ko, a 46 year-old hawker at Trang Municipalty’s fresh food market, in the south of Thailand, has switched from herbal drinks to selling artificial yellow marigold flowers, because real marigolds are in such high demand that the price rose from between 25 and 35 baht to between 75 and 100 baht. In many places, they have run out of stock. This resulted in the demand for artificial marigolds. Also, the plastic flowers are cheaper, easier to take care of and last longer. Miss Vachiraporn began selling plastic marigolds at the beginning of October. She now earns over 2,000 baht a day. The closer the royal cremation day gets, the more scarce real flowers become and the more artificial flowers she sells.
