Thailand’s Loy Kratong Festival started early in Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai. Thousands of tourists gathered in the city to enjoy the spectacular displays. Over 100,000 colorful lanterns and candles provided the decoration and illumination. The local administration is encouraging people to use Kratong, or flower baskets, made of only biodegradable materials.
In Samut Songkhram province, for safety, they have installed a 30 meter chute at a pier, so that people can float their kratongs without getting too close to the water’s edge.
Loy Kratong, a tradition which falls on the full moon of the 12th month of the lunar calendar, is to pay respect to the Goddess of the River.
