The director of Thailand’s Chiang Mai Zoo, Wuttichai Muangman, has given a press conference about the recent killing of his mahout by the zoo’s star elephant “Ekachai”. Apparently Somsak, the mahout, was trying to calm his 32 year old elephant, which appeared to be in ‘musth’, a condition often associated with mating. He was feeding and bathing him but, when Ekachai was unchained for the bath, he repeatedly struck Somsak with his trunk and tusks. After the tragedy, elephant feeding time was suspended for visitor safety. Ekachai had been raised by his late mahout and had never attacked anyone before.
